Arena-M protection system undergoes Russian modernization
Russia has begun modernizing its Arena-M active protection system (APS) following combat tests on the front lines in Ukraine. The system, which is designed to intercept guided missiles, grenades, and drones, was recently observed on T-72B3A tanks. Reports indicate that the system has shown effectiveness in neutralizing incoming drones, thereby increasing crew survivability.
As part of a planned upgrade, Russia aims to increase the number of interceptor projectiles from 12 to 36 units. This third stage of development is projected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027.
However, Ukrainian armor researcher Andriy Tarasenko has raised technical concerns regarding this expansion. He noted that tripling the ammunition capacity within the current turret dimensions may be unfeasible without significant structural changes, as increasing the turret width could impede maintenance access to the engine and gearbox compartments.
