S. Jaishankar outlines strategic roadmap for middle powers and defends India-Russia ties

At the Munich Security Conference in New Delhi, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar outlined a strategic vision for emerging and middle powers to cooperate in reshaping global governance. He advocated for a multipolar world and emphasized the importance of strategic autonomy for non-superpower nations.

Addressing India's relationship with Russia, Jaishankar defended the long-standing bilateral ties, noting that Moscow has historically supported India's security and territorial integrity. He highlighted that the partnership has evolved into a multifaceted economic relationship involving trade, energy, and space cooperation. As part of this engagement, Russia is expected to employ approximately 70,000 skilled Indian workers in the construction and logistics sectors this year. India also aims to expand exports to Russia across seven key sectors, including pharmaceuticals and automobiles.

Regarding the Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar signaled a shift in India's approach, stating that New Delhi is now actively engaging in direct dialogue with both Kyiv and Moscow. He emphasized that India's goal is to facilitate an end to hostilities through diplomacy, with current efforts focusing on Black Sea shipping safety, grain exports, and energy security.
