Russia-Ukraine war enters fourth year of attrition and stalemate

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has entered its fourth and a half year, characterized by a grinding war of attrition and a deepening stalemate. While battlefield breakthroughs remain limited, the intensity of long-range missile and drone strikes on civilian infrastructure has increased. United Nations monitors reported at least 437 civilian deaths in July 2026, marking a significant monthly peak. On the military front, reports indicate substantial casualties, with estimates suggesting approximately 240,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the full-scale invasion began.

In response to the ongoing violence, a humanitarian art project has emerged to memorialize the victims. Initiated by Ukrainian blacksmith Serhii Polubotko, the project involves the creation of small metal crosses. Following an initial gift from a Slovakian colleague, the movement has grown into an international effort, with nearly 300 crosses contributed from 27 different countries, including nations in Europe, North America, and Australia. An exhibition of these works is currently being held at the Sint-Michiels en Petruskerk in Belgium.
