Russia-Ukraine war expands to Black Sea resorts amid rising European war fatigue

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with strikes reaching new territories and political challenges mounting for Kyiv. Recent attacks have extended into the Black Sea resort areas of Gelendzhik and Arkhipo-Osipovka, regions near Crimea often favored by Russian President Vladimir Putin. These strikes, involving drones and missiles, have resulted in civilian casualties and represent a significant increase in the depth of operations along the Russian coast.

In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky faces a multi-front struggle. Russia has intensified missile bombardments against cities and power infrastructure, including a massive strike on Kyiv involving ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles. Simultaneously, Ukraine's economy is pressured by a blockade of Black Sea ports affecting grain exports.

Domestically, Zelensky is navigating internal political pressure following the dismissal of a senior aide over money laundering allegations and calls for elections from former officials citing governance crises. Internationally, there are indications of growing ‘war fatigue’ among European populations and political parties, particularly on the far right and far left, as the conflict's economic and security costs continue to rise.
