Russia unveils Volna Kupol Garant anti-Starlink jamming system

Russia says it has developed a new electronic‑warfare system called Volna Kupol Garant that can temporarily disrupt communications via SpaceX’s Starlink satellites without physically damaging the hardware. The system allegedly uses a high‑frequency radio beam directed at the satellites, creating a jamming zone of up to 20 km². It consists of six trailer‑mounted modules, each with two steerable antennas, and can block a satellite’s ability to serve ground terminals for several minutes after the signal stops.

The existence and performance of the system have not been independently verified. Dmitri Kuziakin, the chief designer of the Integrated Solutions Center for Drones, told TechRadar that “Volna does not physically destroy the satellite, but during ‘illumination’ blocks the capacity of a given satellite to serve ground terminals.” The announcement has raised concerns in the United States and Ukraine, where Starlink is relied upon for military navigation, intelligence gathering and drone coordination.
