Russia uses AI bot networks to target US elections

Russian-backed disinformation operators are utilizing an AI-driven bot network, identified by researchers as ‘Operation Matryoshka’, to influence US midterm elections. The campaign primarily targets Democratic candidates through the spread of fabricated news and deepfake videos on the social media platform X.

Analysis of approximately 130 manipulated videos and fake news headlines reveals a systematic effort to erode public trust in electoral integrity. These deepfakes often feature synthetic images of Hollywood celebrities, such as Robert De Niro and Julia Roberts, appearing to support specific political messages or accusations of corruption. The campaign frequently uses the hashtag #AllDemocratsAreCriminals.

Researchers from Antibot4Navalny, Graphika, and dTeam noted distinct patterns of bot activity, including sudden spikes in views followed by abrupt stabilization, which differs from organic engagement. The operation aims to undermine political support for Ukraine and create domestic discord within the United States.
