NATO allies target Russian-linked properties near military bases
Authorities in Sweden, Lithuania, and Norway are taking action against hundreds of properties with Russian connections located near strategic military installations and critical infrastructure. Security services warn that these locations, including holiday homes, could be used for espionage, surveillance, or sabotage against NATO allies.
In Sweden, significant concern centers on a seven-bedroom estate near the Muskö naval base, which is capable of hosting submarines and destroyers. The property was purchased in 2017 for 18.6 million Swedish kronor by Tatiana Sazonova, the wife of Russian oligarch Stanislav Aleschenko, who is linked to Vladimir Putin. Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced plans for the government to seize the property, noting it creates a critical security gap regarding potential drone threats.
In Lithuania, authorities have identified Russian-linked properties near the Šiauliai airbase, which hosts NATO fighter jets, as well as near other military training grounds and airports. Similar concerns have been raised in Norway regarding properties overlooking military sites.
