Russia uses modified RM-48U missiles in Ukraine attacks
Russia is increasingly deploying modified RM-48U ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Originally designed as aerial targets for air defense training, these missiles are being used to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses and preserve more advanced weaponry, such as Iskander and Zircon missiles, for future campaigns.
Analysis of these missiles reveals a significant technological dependency on foreign components. Experts, including Vladislav Vlasyuk, have noted that key systems within the RM-48U rely on technologies not currently available in Russia. Specifically, components from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, China, and Taiwan have been identified.
A critical element is the inertial navigation system, which allows the missile to follow a predetermined trajectory without external signals. This system utilizes a laser gyroscope containing a module manufactured by the French company 3SP Technologies. The use of these modified training missiles poses a high risk to civilian areas due to their relative inaccuracy compared to standard ballistic missiles.
