Russia utilizes former Soviet nations to bypass EU sanctions
Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the international community has implemented unprecedented sanctions against Russia, including freezing financial assets, restricting trade, and disconnecting major banking institutions from the SWIFT system. Approximately 80% of Russian banking assets have been subject to U.S. sanctions.
Despite these measures, which target dual-use technology, luxury goods, and industrial items, Russia has utilized former Soviet Union (FSU) nations to circumvent economic restrictions. The primary goal of the sanctions remains to constrict the Russian economy to a level where it can no longer sustain its military operations in Ukraine.
