Russia views U.S. sanctions decision as path to normalization
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that the United States' decision regarding sanctions reflects a serious approach from Washington and creates conditions for progress and the normalization of relations between the two nations. Ryabkov noted that while the sustainability of this approach remains to be seen, the administration's actions and subsequent comments provide room for maneuver in this area.
The remarks follow an executive order signed on October 17 that annuls several restrictive measures previously set against Russia and Iran. The order aims to align with United States national interests. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the White House will utilize a 60-day grace period to conduct a detailed analysis of potential economic consequences, particularly regarding proposed tariffs of up to 500% on Russian imports which could impact global trade and third parties like India.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Ryabkov emphasized that Moscow's fundamental stance on a resolution does not depend on the decision to delay 'hellish sanctions.' He welcomed Washington's expressed desire to assist in resolving the crisis but noted that a sustainable solution must address the root causes of the conflict, a step he suggested has not yet been shown by Kyiv or its primary sponsors.
