Russia warns Armenia against Western pivot to avoid 'new Ukraine' scenario

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, has warned that Armenia's pivot toward Western institutions could lead to the country becoming a 'new Ukraine.' In an interview with Iranian state television, Medvedev suggested that Armenia's current leadership is changing its developmental direction in a way that will lead to negative outcomes.

This warning follows Armenia's efforts to strengthen ties with the European Union. In March 2025, the Armenian parliament passed a law to initiate the EU accession process, and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has indicated that a formal application is forthcoming.

Russian leadership has expressed strong opposition to these moves. President Vladimir Putin has stated that EU membership is incompatible with Armenia's membership in the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and has suggested a referendum should be held on the matter. While Armenia and Russia remain formal allies through the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), relations have significantly deteriorated as Yerevan seeks broader diplomatic and security partnerships.
