Russia warns Armenia of risks regarding EU integration

Russia has issued warnings to Armenia regarding its pursuit of integration with the European Union, stating that such a move will inevitably complicate relations with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova noted that Armenia’s attempt to pursue both EU integration and EAEU benefits is unsustainable due to the fundamental legal and normative contradictions between the two organizations. She suggested that if Armenia chooses the EU path, it must forgo the privileges provided by the EAEU.

In addition to political warnings, Russia has begun implementing economic pressure through trade restrictions. Since late May, Moscow has imposed import limitations on various Armenian products, including agricultural goods, mineral water, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products, citing phytosanitary and safety concerns. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has criticized these measures as being contrary to bilateral agreements and EU regulations. S&P estimates that the affected export volume could reach approximately 2 percent of Armenia’s GDP.
