Russia warns of catastrophic consequences over US orbital weapons

Russia has accused the United States of risking ‘catastrophic consequences for humanity’ following admissions regarding the deployment of orbital weapons. The Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, stated that Washington is pursuing selfish interests and ignoring the dangers of an armed conflict in space.

The tension follows comments from US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, who confirmed that the United States has placed ‘space control weapons’ in orbit. Meink stated these systems are capable of defending armed forces against hostile actions.

Russia claims that the development of American weapons in orbit undermines space exploration prospects and poses ‘colossal risks’ to essential civilian activities. In response to these developments, Russia has participated in drafting UN General Assembly resolutions aimed at banning the deployment of weapons in space.
