Putin threatens seizure of EU ships over shadow fleet sanctions
Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened retaliatory measures against European nations following new European Union sanctions targeting the Russian 'shadow fleet'. The EU's 21st sanctions package allows member states to seize and sell cargo, such as oil and grain, from vessels suspected of bypassing international sanctions.
Putin has characterized these maritime enforcement actions as 'piracy and robbery,' warning that Russia will respond symmetrically by seizing European commercial vessels if necessary. He stated that Moscow will act wherever it deems appropriate to defend its interests.
Several European nations have already implemented these measures. Sweden previously seized a Russian vessel carrying grain, and the United Kingdom has been holding the tanker Smyrtos, which carries 100,000 cubic meters of oil. The dispute highlights escalating tensions in maritime security and the ongoing economic struggle regarding Russian energy exports.
