Russia warns of military response to NATO nuclear expansion

Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Ambassador-at-Large Andrey Belousov has warned that any expansion of United States and NATO nuclear missions in Europe would necessitate a military-technical response from Moscow.

Belousov noted that while the United States has stationed nuclear weapons in NATO countries since the 1950s, recent developments have made the presence of these weapons a matter of fundamental importance. He argued that previous US withdrawals from countries like Greece and the United Kingdom did not enhance regional security, as those assets were replaced by presence in Türkiye or the UK's own arsenal, maintaining the existing military-political context.

The rhetoric comes amid heightened tensions following the expiration of the New START treaty and ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Market indicators currently reflect increased perceived risks of a potential military clash between NATO and Russia.
