Russia warns of Western provocations and asserts Far East interests

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused Western powers of planning provocations to implicate Russia in illegal arms deliveries to drug cartels in Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela. According to the SVR, the West intends to use fabricated audio and video evidence to suggest Russian involvement. Analysts suggest that while such accusations may spread Russophobia in Latin America, they may lack long-term impact given the region's existing history of purchasing Russian military equipment.

Separately, Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Russian Far East and the Kuril Islands is being interpreted as a strategic move to assert Russian interests in the Indo-Pacific. The visit comes amid increasing military cooperation between the United States, Japan, and Australia through frameworks like AUKUS and QUAD. The trip also serves as a signal regarding the long-standing territorial dispute between Russia and Japan over the Kuril Islands.
