Russia has issued strong warnings against the deployment of advanced U.S. missile systems in Norway, labeling the move as a highly destabilizing action by NATO. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the presence of ground-based intermediate-range systems, specifically those utilizing Mk-41 launchers capable of firing Tomahawk cruise missiles, nullifies the prerequisites for constructive strategic stability dialogue between Moscow and Washington.

Russian officials warned that these systems could reach significant portions of European Russia, including Moscow. Consequently, Russia’s strategic deterrence forces are prioritizing the monitoring of these deployment sites and their supporting infrastructure as potential targets in the event of an armed conflict.

In addition to U.S. missile systems, Russia condemned Norway’s military buildup in the Arctic. This includes the reinforcement of the Finnmark Brigade with South Korean K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers and planned acquisitions of K239 CHUNMOO multiple-launch rocket systems by 2030. Russian Ambassador Nikolay Korchunov noted that these long-range offensive capabilities near the border pose an immediate threat to Russian national security and the strategic importance of the Kola Peninsula.

Separately, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandr Grushko characterized recent NATO Arctic maneuvers, such as Operation Atlantic City, as explicit training for potential military confrontation with Russian forces.
