Germany and Russia hold tense diplomatic meeting at UN
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a 20-minute meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The encounter, which was the first between the two diplomats since the start of the war in 2022, was facilitated by third-party intermediaries.
Wadephul described the discussion as “tense” and noted that no agreements were reached on major issues. During the meeting, Germany urged Moscow to enter negotiations with Kyiv and advocated for a deal to resume grain exports through the Black Sea.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov offered a different account of the meeting's origin, claiming that Wadephul had requested the encounter at the last minute. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that while the meeting was a positive sign, it did not represent a shift in Berlin's official stance toward Moscow. Lavrov emphasized that dialogue remains preferable to a total lack of communication.
