Russian AI-guided drone kills three civilians in Zaporizhzhia

A Russian Molniya fixed-wing attack drone, utilizing onboard artificial intelligence to navigate and select targets without human intervention, killed three civilians in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, on July 6.

Forensic analysis of the wreckage, conducted by Ukrainian military and drone specialists, revealed that the aircraft lacked radio-control antennas, suggesting it operated autonomously. The drone was reportedly programmed to fly toward a specific gas station, but once in the vicinity, its AI system—powered by an Nvidia Jetson Orin minicomputer—independently identified and targeted specific objects, likely propane tanks.

The strike resulted in the deaths of 19-year-old student Tetiana Bubynets, 41-year-old Oleksiy Svirin, and 48-year-old Roman Karpiy. Experts noted that the absence of radio signals makes such drones difficult to disrupt using standard electronic-warfare systems. This incident is cited as a significant example of the emerging era of autonomous warfare.
