Russia claims machine gun interception of Ukrainian Flamingo missile
Russian authorities in the Kursk region claim that a mobile defense squad from the BARS-Kursk brigade successfully intercepted an Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile using machine guns. The incident occurred during the night of August 22-23, 2026.
Kursk Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein reported that the squad detected the large missile flying at an altitude of less than 50 meters and a speed of approximately 500 km/h. After being engaged by gunfire, the projectile crashed into a forested area. Russian sources released thermal imagery and footage of the debris to support the claim, though independent experts have not verified the footage or the specific weapons used.
The FP-5 Flamingo is a long-range cruise missile developed by the Ukrainian defense contractor Fire Point. It features a 1,150 kg warhead, a launch weight of 6,000 kg, and a maximum range of 3,000 km. Russian officials stated that the missile was intended for a strategic facility in the Tula region.
