Russia deploys Banderol munitions to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses
Russia has increasingly deployed Banderol (S8000) munitions, a low-cost, jet-powered loitering munition, to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses. Manufactured by Kronshtadt JSC, these weapons combine features of cruise missiles and attack drones. While they carry smaller warheads than traditional cruise missiles, they often require the same expensive air defense systems to intercept, creating a strategic cost imbalance for Ukraine. Banderol munitions are primarily launched from Orion reconnaissance drones or Mi-28 helicopters and can reach speeds over 500 km/h with a range of up to 500 km. In the Odesa region, these munitions are reportedly involved in approximately 80% of Russian attacks on infrastructure.
In related developments, Ukraine is accelerating the production of its own domestic precision-guided gliding bomb, the Equalizer, to reduce reliance on foreign military aid. Additionally, reports indicate that Russia has suspended the mass production of Kinzhal and Kh-32 missiles due to technical and precision issues identified during combat testing.
