Russian automotive market shifts toward Lada and Chinese brands
The Russian automotive market is undergoing a significant transformation following the departure of Western manufacturers. Data from the analytical agency ‘Autostat’ indicates that over one million vehicles were sold in Russia in 2023.
Domestic brand Lada remains the market leader, with the Lada Granta accounting for 18.5% of total sales (195,910 units). Other popular domestic models include the Lada Niva Travel, a long-standing off-road vehicle produced in Tolyatti.
Simultaneously, Chinese manufacturers are gaining substantial market share, particularly in the crossover and SUV segments. The Haval Jolion emerged as a top seller, with 55,550 units sold. While some models are imported, others, like certain Haval versions, are assembled locally in Russia.
In contrast to the broader market growth, specific new entrants like the Amberauto A5—an electric sedan based on the Chinese JMEV Yi—are facing challenges. Despite plans by Avtotor to increase local production components by 2027, the model saw a sharp decline in registrations, with only 34 units sold in the first eight months of 2026 and none in September.
