Russian Cosmos 2612 satellite approaches commercial radar satellite
The Russian military satellite Cosmos 2612 has performed a series of deliberate maneuvers that brought it within approximately 500 meters of ICEYE-X36, a commercial radar satellite used for Earth observation. The proximity of the two spacecraft has raised significant security concerns, as ICEYE-X36 provides services that may support national security for countries including Ukraine.
Orbital monitoring firm LeoLabs reported that between October 15 and 19, Cosmos 2612 matched the commercial satellite’s orbital plane and adjusted its speed and altitude to reposition itself around the target. This behavior is consistent with rendezvous and proximity operations.
United States officials have characterized the activity as threatening. Thomas DiNanno, US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, stated at the UN that the maneuvers were “consistent with on-orbit weapons operations.” While the intent remains unconfirmed, the incident has intensified scrutiny regarding Russia’s counterspace capabilities and the vulnerability of commercial satellites used in international conflicts.
