Russia seizes 123 Jehovah’s Witnesses properties, transfers to state
A Moscow district court ordered the confiscation of 123 real‑estate assets belonging to the Jehovah’s Witnesses and directed that they be transferred to the Russian state. The seized assets comprise 63 residential and commercial buildings covering more than 11,000 square metres and 60 land plots totaling about 5.6 hectares across various Russian regions.
The properties had previously been registered under the Swedish branch of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The religious group has been banned as an “extremist organisation” in Russia since 2017, a designation the European Court of Human Rights later ruled unlawful in 2022. The crackdown has also led to the imprisonment of hundreds of members, with more than 220 sentenced in recent years.
