Euro banknotes in circulation rise to €1.6 trillion amid crisis fears
The value of euro banknotes in circulation has risen significantly, increasing from approximately €1 trillion in 2016 to €1.6 trillion by June 2026. According to data from the European Central Bank (ECB), the total number of banknotes in circulation has also surpassed 31 billion.
ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane noted a paradox: while the use of cash for daily transactions is declining in favor of digital and contactless payments, the total stock of physical money held by the public is growing. This trend suggests that Europeans are increasingly treating cash as a financial refuge or emergency reserve.
This shift is driven by heightened anxieties regarding geopolitical conflicts, natural disasters such as wildfires and floods, and the potential for cyber-attacks to paralyze digital payment infrastructures. In response to these risks, the European Union previously advised citizens to maintain a 72-hour emergency supply of essentials, including food, water, and cash, to ensure self-sufficiency during crises.
