Russian diplomats in Vienna suspected of intelligence ties

Investigations by the exiled Russian media outlet Agentstvo suggest that approximately one in six Russian diplomats stationed in Vienna may have links to Russian intelligence services. Based on leaked databases containing registration and tax information, the report identifies specific individuals within the Russian Embassy in Austria who may be connected to the SWR (Foreign Intelligence Service), GRU (Military Intelligence), and FSB (Federal Security Service).

The findings extend beyond the embassy to include personnel at the Russian Permanent Mission to the OSCE and other international organizations in Vienna. For instance, several diplomats were reportedly registered at residential addresses in Moscow known to be occupied almost exclusively by intelligence officers.

In response to these allegations, political figures in Austria, including SPÖ foreign policy spokesperson Petra Bayr, have called for a thorough investigation. Bayr emphasized that diplomatic status does not grant immunity for criminal activities such as espionage. There are also ongoing legislative efforts to tighten espionage laws to protect the international organizations hosted in Austria.
