Russian disinformation group targets Texas Senate candidate

A covert Kremlin-linked group known as Storm-1516 has launched a disinformation campaign targeting Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. The operation involved the dissemination of an AI-generated video on X that falsely accused Talarico of misconduct. The video, which mimicked the appearance and pacing of legitimate news content, gained over 850,000 views within a single day.

Researchers and U.S. officials noted the timing of the release was deliberate, appearing just after early voting began in Texas to maximize impact before corrections could be issued. This incident follows similar patterns of Russian influence operations, including a previous unfounded accusation against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Intelligence assessments suggest Russia has increased online influence efforts targeting Democratic candidates in closely contested Senate races. While the operations appear to focus on specific individuals, officials describe the broader goal as generating chaos and anarchy within the American political process, particularly targeting politicians supportive of Ukraine.
