Russian drone strikes kill five on Ukrainian passenger bus
Russian drone and missile strikes targeted civilian infrastructure across Ukraine on Wednesday, resulting in multiple casualties. In the Nikopol district of the Dnipropetrovsk region, a drone strike on a passenger minibus killed five people and injured at least seven others. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the attack as an “atrocity” with no military rationale.
Additional strikes impacted the nation's transportation and utility networks. In the Mykolaiv region, a passenger train was struck, damaging a railway station and a diesel locomotive; nearly 170 passengers were evacuated. In the Sumy region, a 17-year-old died from injuries sustained during an explosion, and drone attacks in Konotop damaged schools, medical facilities, and residential homes.
In Zaporizhzhia, a drone hit an ambulance, injuring a driver and a medic, while also destroying a supermarket. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted that since February 2022, over 500 locomotives have been damaged or destroyed by Russian strikes, describing the campaign as a systematic effort to disrupt logistics. Sybiha called on international partners to provide locomotives compatible with Ukraine’s 1,520 millimeter rail gauge.
Commenting on the broader security implications, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned against being naive regarding potential future actions by Vladimir Putin toward the alliance.
