An explosive‑laden drone was found near Ukrainian Antonov An‑124 cargo planes at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany on the night of 4 August 2026. The device contained about 800 g of PETN and Semtex explosives and a defective detonator, and had been modified to evade electronic detection. An airport employee – a bus driver – spotted the drone and disabled it, preventing a possible explosion.
Germany’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office is treating the case as a suspected attempted explosive attack and dangerous interference with air traffic, describing it as a “new level of danger” and a “hybrid” attack by foreign powers. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt used the term “hybrid attack” while Russian officials denied involvement, calling the accusations a staged provocation. A second, smaller object later collided with a DHL aircraft after the runway reopened, forcing the plane to divert to Hannover. The investigation remains ongoing with no official attribution yet.
