Russian engineers develop high-temperature intermetallic titanium alloy
Engineers at the Kurchatov Institute’s National Research Center, VIAM, are developing a new intermetallic titanium alloy designed for engine blades. Unlike conventional alloys, the atoms in this material are arranged in a strict order, making it harder and more heat-resistant.
Igor Bogachev, head of additive manufacturing at VIAM, stated that the material is designed to operate at temperatures between 700-900°C, a range comparable to fresh volcanic lava. The development team expects the alloy to undergo certification and performance testing on test benches and within full-scale engines over the next two to three years. Specific technical parameters of the new material have not yet been disclosed.
