Russian engineers patent revolutionary seismic-resistant building technology
Engineers at the Saint Petersburg State University of Transport Engineering (PSTU) have developed a revolutionary seismic-resistant building design. The innovation, which has been granted a patent by the Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent), utilizes a system of cone-shaped springs and multi-level shock absorbers to protect structures from earthquake damage.
Unlike traditional foundations that transmit seismic energy directly through the building, this new mechanism aims to neutralize kinetic energy at the base. The cone-shaped springs are designed to handle variable loads from multiple directions more effectively than standard cylindrical springs, while the integrated shock absorbers work to actively dampen residual vibrations and prevent the resonance that often leads to structural collapse during seismic events.
