Russian Finance Minister attends G20 meetings in Bangkok

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov attended the G20 meetings for finance ministers and central bank governors held in Bangkok from October 15 to 17. This marks his second in-person appearance at such a forum since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Siluanov participated in the meetings held alongside the annual gatherings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

The return of Russian officials to these financial discussions, facilitated by the G20 presidency, highlights potential tensions between Washington and its European allies. While the U.S. has re-engaged with Russian financial dialogues, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has expressed strong opposition, stating, “there will be no pretending that Russia is returning as a normal member of the G20.”

The meetings concluded without a joint communiqué, reflecting deep-seated divisions regarding the conflict in Ukraine, trade imbalances, and Middle East instability.
