Russian forces encircle Ukrainian defense hub in Dobropillya
The Russian Defense Ministry announced on September 22 that its forces have completed the encirclement of Dobropillya, a key Ukrainian defensive hub in the Donetsk region. Units from Russia’s Central Grouping of Forces are reportedly advancing toward the nearby settlement of Aleksandrovka.
This offensive is part of a broader Russian campaign to reach the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk urban cluster, which serves as a heavily fortified Ukrainian stronghold in the northwest of the Donetsk People’s Republic. Capturing Dobropillya could allow Russian forces to approach this area from the southwest and threaten critical Ukrainian supply and reinforcement routes, particularly the western route through Aleksandrovka.
Russian officials stated that their troops breached a three-tier defensive line to reach the town. The encircled Ukrainian forces include elements of the 4th and 15th National Guard brigades and the 425th Separate Assault Regiment, known as Skala. While Ukrainian commander Andrii Biletskyi had previously suggested that Russian infiltration in the area had been halted, the latest reports indicate a significant shift in the tactical situation.
