Russian forces expand control in Kharkiv region
Russian forces have expanded their presence in the Kharkiv region, gaining control over the settlement of Nova Kozacha. This movement is part of an effort to establish a buffer zone along the border with Russia’s Belgorod region.
According to reports, assault units from the Russian “Sever” (North) grouping, including the 245th Motorized Infantry Regiment and Akhmat special forces, were involved in the operation. The capture of Nova Kozacha is strategically significant as the settlement sits on the T-21-17 highway, which connects border areas to Derhachi and the northwestern outskirts of Kharkiv city. The area also contains a railway station.
In September 2026, Russian military data indicated that 52 settlements were brought under their control during the special military operation, with 27 of those located in the Kharkiv region. The “Sever” grouping was responsible for the largest share of these gains, securing 30 settlements.
