Russian forces suffer 42,860 casualties in July, highest since 2022
The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian armed forces incurred 42,860 casualties – killed, wounded, missing or captured – in July 2026. This figure represents the steepest monthly loss since Russia launched its full‑scale invasion in February 2022, when casualties were around 26,000.
Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said the Kremlin is attempting to conceal the heavy toll with exaggerated claims of rapid advances, while satellite and field data show Russian troops progressed only about 18.5 square kilometres per day. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the high loss rate could force President Vladimir Putin to expand mobilization, and he estimates total Russian war losses at roughly 700,000 dead and 1.6 million overall since the conflict began.
