Russian frigate fires flares at Danish helicopter near Gedser

A Russian frigate fired two pyrotechnic flares toward a Danish Fennec military helicopter in international waters off Gedser. The incident occurred while the helicopter was performing routine photographic coverage of the vessel.

One of the flares passed in close proximity to the aircraft. Danish Defense confirmed that neither the helicopter nor its crew sustained any injuries or damage. Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus characterized the event as serious, describing the Russian actions as “very unprofessional seamanship” and an indication of increased risk-taking.

In response, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian ambassador for a meeting. While the incident is viewed as a serious provocation and a hostile act intended to deter surveillance, Danish officials stated they will not activate NATO's Article 4 or Article 5.
