Novy Urengoy gas facility hit by drone attack in Siberia
A drone attack has struck a major industrial facility in Novy Urengoy, located in Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets region, marking the first reported strike on natural gas production infrastructure deep within the Russian interior. The incident, occurring approximately 3,000 to 3,300 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, caused a fire due to falling debris from the unmanned aerial vehicles.
Yamalo-Nenets is a critical strategic hub for the Russian economy, serving as a primary source of natural gas with estimated reserves of 26.5 trillion cubic meters. The region is also the starting point for the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline intended for export to China. While the exact facility hit has not been officially named by regional Governor Dmitry Artyukhov, monitoring groups have identified the Novy Urengoy condensate preparation plant as the likely target.
Authorities reported that there were no deaths or injuries resulting from the attack, and personnel were evacuated as a precaution. The Ukrainian company Fire Point claimed responsibility, stating its drones successfully traveled over 3,300 kilometers to reach the target. Gazprom has not issued an official comment regarding the incident.
