Nikolai Varpakhovich wounded in suspected assassination attempt in Russia
Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of Russia’s 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, was critically wounded in a suspected assassination attempt in the Saratov region. The attack occurred near his residence in the village of Probuzhdeniye, where an unidentified assailant on a motorcycle wearing a helmet opened fire.
Varpakhovich sustained gunshot wounds to his face and body and is reportedly being prepared for medical transport to Moscow. His driver was also wounded during the incident but managed to escape. The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation into the attempted murder.
Varpakhovich is a high-ranking official within Russia’s long-range aviation forces, which operate strategic bombers like the Tu-95MS. He has been a central figure in international tensions, as the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) recently accused him of war crimes for allegedly ordering the July 2024 missile strike on the Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv. The European Union has also imposed sanctions on him due to his role in the conflict.
