Russian GRU Unit 29155 targeted political opponents in Europe
Russian GRU Unit 29155, an intelligence squad specialized in sabotage and assassinations, has been identified as targeting political opponents across Europe. Operating without official diplomatic cover, agents have reportedly used false identities as journalists and human rights activists to conduct espionage.
Targets of Russian intelligence include several prominent non-governmental organizations. The Sakharov Center and the human rights group Memorial were both shut down by Moscow courts in recent years. While the Free Russia Forum, founded by former chess champion Gary Kasparov, operates from Vilnius, Lithuania, to avoid Kremlin jurisdiction, an agent from Unit 29155 successfully infiltrated its meetings to gather intelligence. The Kremlin has officially designated Kasparov as a 'threat' to the Russian state.
