Russian LGBT Network shuts down following extremism ruling
The Russian LGBT Network, the country’s largest queer advocacy group, has announced it is shutting down its public operations. The decision follows a ruling by a St. Petersburg court that designated the organization as “extremist” following a lawsuit by the Russian Justice Ministry.
The group stated that the designation makes its previous format of work impossible, as any connection to the organization now poses significant safety risks to staff, supporters, and those seeking assistance. In a statement, the organization emphasized that “people’s safety comes first” and that continuing public work could endanger those involved in its activities.
This shutdown follows a 2023 ruling by Russia’s Supreme Court which designated the “international LGBT movement” as an extremist organization. This legal framework has expanded the state's ability to prosecute LGBTQ+ visibility and organizing under new extremism laws. Natalia Soloviova, the chair of the network, has since relocated to New York City following the increasing pressure and state-funded media accusations against the group.
