Russian men pay for cosmetic ear deformation to mimic fighters
A new cosmetic trend in Russia involves men paying to undergo procedures that deliberately deform their ear cartilage to mimic cauliflower ear. The condition, which typically results from repeated blunt force trauma in combat sports like MMA, boxing, or rugby, is being sought out by individuals with no athletic background to project an image of toughness and intimidation.
The procedure reportedly costs approximately 6,000 rubles (about £55) per ear. Medical professionals and psychologists have raised concerns regarding the trend, noting that while the initial cost is low, reconstructive surgery to repair the deformity is significantly more expensive. Potential health risks include infection, permanent hearing damage, and disfigurement.
Psychologist Ekaterina Trofimova noted that the trend relies on an outward mask of masculinity, suggesting that true martial arts skill is often characterized by composure rather than ostentatious physical markers. Combat sports communities have also criticized the practice, as actual athletes often undergo medical procedures to drain fluid and prevent this exact type of permanent damage.
