Ukraine strikes deep into Russian Arctic gas heartland
Ukraine has significantly expanded its long-range strike capabilities, conducting its deepest attack into Russian territory to date. Ukrainian special forces targeted two critical natural gas processing plants in the Arctic region, specifically in the Novy Urengoy and Purovsky districts of the Yamal-Nenets region. These drones reportedly traveled over 3,000 kilometers to reach the facilities, which are vital to Russia's gas production economy.
Simultaneously, Russia intensified its aerial campaign against Ukraine. In Kyiv, Russian drone strikes using jet-powered technology targeted two Ukrnafta fuel stations, resulting in at least two deaths and multiple injuries. Authorities noted that these fast-moving drones are increasingly difficult for air defenses to intercept. Other Russian strikes hit a shopping mall in Pavlohrad, causing significant casualties, and targeted residential areas in Zaporizhzhia.
Ukrainian forces also conducted maritime operations, using kamikaze USVs to attack a port and waterfront in Sochi, injuring eight people. Additionally, Ukrainian drones targeted the Russian naval base at Novorossiysk, striking oil terminals and warships. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the long-range strikes as a necessary measure to impact the Russian economy.
