Russian Military Death Toll in Ukraine Reaches 236,066

The independent Russian outlet Mediazona, working with the BBC Russian service, has verified the identities of 236,066 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine, adding 2,867 names to the list since the mid‑July update. The confirmed casualties include more than 86,600 volunteers, 26,200 recruited prisoners, 19,600 mobilised troops and 7,465 officers, with exact dates of death known for 218,400 cases (about 93%). Analysts say the real figures are likely higher because the data rely on public sources such as obituaries and family reports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russian forces have suffered roughly 1.6 million military losses since the invasion began, including about 700,000 dead. The Ukrainian General Staff estimates that Russia has lost about 1,449,120 personnel in Ukraine up to 2 August, a number that combines killed, wounded, missing and captured. Western analysts consistently conclude that Russian losses far exceed Ukrainian casualties.
