Russian military deaths in Ukraine reach 241,088, BBC reports
The BBC Russian service, in collaboration with the investigative website Mediazona and a group of volunteers, has identified the names of 241,088 Russian military personnel killed since the start of the invasion of Ukraine. This figure is based solely on publicly available data, and the actual death toll is believed to be significantly higher.
Approximately 56% of the identified deceased are volunteers, reservists, or convicts recruited from correctional facilities. The data indicates a shift in recruitment strategies; while early operations involved highly trained elite units with younger soldiers, current replenishment relies heavily on individuals recruited from civilian life with minimal training.
The average age of the deceased Russian soldiers is 38, which is 13 years older than the average age during the initial months of the invasion. Among recent contract signers, most fatalities are men aged 42–45. The report also notes that 2,776 volunteers were over the age of 60, while 6,435 men under the age of 24 have lost their lives.
