Russian military integrates AI and centralizes drone command
The Russian military is centralizing its drone operations and integrating artificial intelligence to enhance battlefield decision-making and targeting capabilities. In the Dnepr River Delta, Ukrainian intelligence reports that Russian forces are consolidating control of drones under a single command. Specifically, naval drones from the 18th Army are now reportedly subordinated to the 50th Independent Remote-Controlled Systems Brigade, Varyag.
This reorganization aims to integrate reconnaissance and engagement capabilities into a single decision-making chain, reducing the time between detecting Ukrainian movements and launching an attack. The Varyag brigade utilizes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), electronic warfare equipment, and ground robots to conduct missions while minimizing risks to personnel.
Parallel to these structural changes, Russia is focusing on AI integration to process vast amounts of battlefield information. Analysts suggest this is a response to NATO's experimentation with military AI. The goal is to use AI to synthesize combat environments, assist commanders in decision-making, and improve targeting precision. Systems like the Automated Troop Command-and-Control System (SVOD) are already seeing partial deployment, with the potential to extend automatic engagement capabilities to aircraft and ships.
