Russian military seeks to delay Donbas occupation until 2027

The Russian military has reportedly requested a delay in the timeline for the full occupation of Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast. According to Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, while Russian political leadership aimed for control by the end of 2026, military commanders are now seeking to extend this deadline to March 31, 2027.

This marks the 15th time since the start of the full-scale invasion that the deadline for capturing the region has been shifted. Currently, Russian forces control approximately 80 percent of the Donetsk region. Despite claims from Russian leadership regarding an accelerating offensive, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggest that at the current rate of operations, Russia may not achieve full control of the province until 2032.

Experts warn that the Russian command may be operating based on a ‘fictional reality’ due to chronic misinformation from military leadership. The slow pace of the advance is attributed to the difficulty of urban warfare within Ukraine’s fortified belts and the challenges Russian forces face when moving across open terrain, where Ukrainian forces have successfully disrupted logistics and tactical initiatives.
