Russian warships return to Tartus naval base in Syria
Russian warships have returned to the naval base in Tartus, Syria, signaling a continued military presence despite previous agreements regarding the transfer of facilities to the new Syrian administration. The naval group, referred to as the 'Syrian Express', included the destroyer Admiral Levchenko, the logistics ship Sparta, the supply ship Akademik Pashin, and the tanker Skobelev.
Satellite imagery and maritime tracking indicate the fleet traveled from the coast of Spain toward the Mediterranean. After passing the Strait of Gibraltar, the vessels reportedly deactivated their Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders. The convoy is believed to have been transporting military equipment and weaponry to Syria.
The return of these vessels challenges Western interpretations of an August 9 agreement, which suggested that Russian military bases in Tartus and Hmeimim would be converted into 'joint training centers'. While Russia's military footprint in Syria has decreased since the end of the Bashar al-Assad administration in December 2024, analysts suggest Moscow maintains its position due to Syria's reliance on Russian-made weaponry and the need for replenishment of its stockpiles.
