Russian Navy equips submarines with anti‑drone nets and adds deck machine guns

The Russian Navy has installed anti‑UAV/USV nets, floating buoy barriers and deck‑mounted machine guns on diesel‑electric Project 636.3 “Varshavyanka” submarines based at the Kronstadt naval base in the Baltic Sea. The protective mesh, designed to shield against Ukrainian drone attacks, can be quickly detached before diving and increases the time needed to ready a submarine for launch. Similar anti‑drone systems have been fitted on other Russian submarines, including Project 877 “Paltus” and nuclear Project 955 “Borey”.

Separately, the Russian defence plant Arsenal has patented a self‑propelled 130 mm A‑192M artillery system for coastal defence. The weapon features an automatic loading mechanism, radar fire‑control (5P‑10 Puma) and a maximum range of about 23 km against ground‑and‑coast targets and 18 km for air targets. Production has begun, with the system expected to enter service by 2026 and to be deployable on vessels such as the Project 22350 “Admiral Gorshkov” class.
