AfD and Russian official plan talks on restoring gas supplies to Germany
Kirill Dmitriev, a special representative for Russian President Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, is reportedly preparing for a meeting with the leadership of Germany's AfD party. The meeting, which could take place as early as March 2027, is intended to discuss the potential resumption of Russian natural gas supplies to Germany.
According to sources, the discussions are contingent upon the establishment of a peace framework between Russia and Ukraine. Potential locations for the summit include Israel, the United Arab Emirates, or India. While organizers have expressed interest in involving the United States, Washington has indicated it has received no such invitation.
Although the AfD is a highly popular party among German voters, it is not part of the current federal government and lacks the official authority to negotiate energy agreements on behalf of the German state. The party has linked the lack of affordable Russian gas to declining industrial competitiveness and rising energy costs in Germany.
