Russian Railways tests autonomous TEM7A locomotives
Russian Railways (RZhD) has launched a new testing phase for an autonomous driving system using the TEM7A diesel shunting locomotive at the Chelyabinsk-Glavny station. This initiative marks a significant step in the automation of the railway industry.
The system operates through the Shunting Automation Center, which acts as a central coordinator for station infrastructure. The center processes real-time data from signal lights and track switches to automatically create and approve detailed movement schedules. These commands are then transmitted directly to the integrated system on the TEM7A locomotive, allowing it to perform shunting operations without manual human intervention.
To navigate complex freight yard environments, the locomotive is equipped with advanced machine vision technology. This system utilizes cameras and image processing algorithms to analyze the tracks ahead and detect unexpected obstacles. If a safety risk is identified, the locomotive is programmed to trigger an emergency stop automatically.
